Tree and Landscape Christmas Lighting in Burlington

The older lakeside neighbourhoods of Burlington have the big trees, and the rural north has the evergreens. Both turn an outline into a scene when they are lit properly.

A roofline gives a house its outline after dark. The trees and garden give it depth. Tree and landscape lighting is designed with the roofline, on the same timer and the same warm or colour scheme, so the house and yard read as one display.

Trees

  • Deciduous trunk and limb wraps. Mini-lights wound up the trunk and out along the main limbs of mature maples, oaks and honey locusts, the look of the big front-yard trees in Roseland and the older streets around downtown.
  • Evergreens. Larger bulbs draped through spruce and pine so the shape shows, common on Kilbride properties and on the windbreaks of rural north Burlington.
  • Ornamentals. Smaller front-garden trees on newer streets, fully wrapped for a dense glow.

Power lines

ESA's guidance is to check for overhead power lines before lighting trees and to stay at least three metres away. Front-yard trees on older Aldershot and Roseland streets often stand near the service wire to the house or the lines along the street. Any part of a canopy within that distance is left dark, and the design shows where.

Gardens, walks and porches

  • Shrubs and hedges. Net lights on boxwood, yew and cedar, quick to fit and even.
  • Walkways. Stake lights or path markers along the front walk, set back so a shovel or snowblower will not catch them.
  • Wreaths and garland. Lit wreaths on doors, windows and gables; garland on railings and over doorways, hung with hooks and ties that leave no marks.

Keeping ground connections dry

ESA asks for connections to be kept off the ground and away from puddles, driveways and walkways. Landscape runs are raised into shrubs or onto stakes, routed away from where driveway melt runs, and fed from a GFCI-protected outlet with a weatherproof cover.

Rural properties

On the larger lots of north Burlington, lit lane-side trees and an evergreen at the end of the driveway often matter more than the roofline, which may be set far back from the road. Long runs are fed from more than one outlet, and a new outdoor outlet near the lane is work for a Licensed Electrical Contractor.

Designing the scene

A good yard display has a focal point, usually the largest tree or the front door, and everything else supports it. On a Roseland lot with one big maple, that tree is wrapped densely and the roofline is kept simple. On a newer Alton Village street where the trees are still young, the house carries the display and the garden adds low light along the walk and in the beds. Colour follows the same logic: warm white on the house with colour on the trees, or the reverse, reads as deliberate, while every element in a different scheme reads as clutter. The design photo shows the whole scene before anything is bought or hung, and items can be added or dropped line by line.

Frequently asked questions

How high up the tree can you go?

As high as is safe from a ladder or lift and at least three metres from any power line. The quote states the height for each tree.

Do wraps harm trees?

No. Lights are wrapped snug, not tight, with nothing fastened into bark, and come off in January.

Can you light the evergreens along a rural driveway?

Yes. Long rural runs are planned with more than one power point so strings are never chained past three.
